Great Falls Roof Repair

How another professional caused this Great Falls home to need roof repair

We received a phone call from a Great Falls home owner requesting an estimate for roof repair due to a couple of different leaks that she has. One is around an attic fan and the other one is around the roof pipe flange. I asked the home owner, “Were these repairs done by a professional Great Falls roof repair company?” And, she said, “No.” I said, “That’s what I thought.”

This one here was installed by an electrician and this one here was installed by a plumber. I know that sounds funny but I am usually 95% correct every time I see a situation like this. She asked me, “How did you know that?” I said, “Well, because usually plumbers and electricians don’t bring roofing shingles.”

In a situation like this they will just bring the attic fan, hammer and nails. And for the plumber, he’ll just bring the pipe flange and the hammer and nails and that’s all the material that they need. What they do in a situation like this is, they lift the shingles up. They slide the flashing underneath. What they did on this, they applied an adhesive underneath the

flashing and they just pushed it down and glued it into position.

Image of a Great Falls roof repair job we completedThis one here, they just nailed the outside edge down on both sides, and then he tarred up over the nails along the whole outside edge of the roof flashing. Both problems will cause leakage. What will happen is, when it rains, water travels under the roof and it just goes underneath the flashing. It just bypasses the tar, because it’s all cracked and will cause leakage sometimes directly below. But in a situation like this, it usually will travel to a lower point of the roof.

This one here, even though, it looks like a neater job, is more serious. Again, when it rains, water just goes underneath the flashing and will cause leakage sometimes here, but most of the time, again, it leaks at a lower point. But, this one here has one problem that the attic fan doesn’t have. There’s a seam here with these two shingles joined and this flashing here ends right here where my arrow is. From here up there’s no flashing. It’s just felt paper.

So, when it rains water goes inside the seam, goes underneath the flashing and causes the roof pipe to leak. That will cause leakage directly below and because of the sides being open that will cause leakage to a lower point of the roof.
