This video shows how a roof vent caused this Reston home to need roof repair
Hi my name is Ken and I’m from Roof twins.com. We received a phone call from a Reston homeowner for a roof repair due a leaking attic fan and when we arrived at her house we noticed the roofers had put nails through the attic fan flashing, By doing that what we need to do is remove all the shingles around the entire circumference of the attic fan so the flashing can be repaired and re-shingled.
Once that is completed we then apply Geocel tripolymer sealant to the underside of all the replaced shingles for 100% adhesion and to make sure that this attic fan never leaks again we have to check the ridge vent directly above just to make sure that the roofers installed the shingles correctly underneath the ridge vent.
When we lifted the ridge vent up we noticed that the shingles were cut short in a few different areas so we had to replace the shingles then apply Geocel tripolymer sealant to the shingle surface and embed the ridge vent back into position making sure that the vent is secured back into position and not just into the plywood but into the rafters as well so the ridge vent never becomes loose again.
The homeowner also mentioned to me that Reston roof repair company said that you can’t have an attic fan and a ridge vent together. That’s partially true but then on the other hand that’s incorrect because it all depends on how close the attic fan is to the ridge vent. If the attic fan Is within 3 feet of the Ridge vent then that’s a problem because what will happen is all the hot air that is being pulled out of the attic fan will be thrown back into the ridge vent creating a vicious cycle.
