This video shows common Mount Vernon roof repair problems that we often find

Hi, this is Steve from rooftwins.com. I’m at a home here in Mount Vernon, Virginia that needs a free estimate for roof repair. Now this home has a lot of problems with the roof, and 95 percent of all roof leaks are due to improper installation of the roof flashings. Now I marked off on the picture here so my men can see exactly what needs to be done, and here you see the red dotted line going around the stack pipe. So what we need to do is remove all the roofing material completely down to the flashing, seal under and above the flashing, and then re-shingle that area.

What happened, was when the contractor originally did the roof installation, he fastened the shingles into the flashing underneath, and that’s what caused a leak. Now also, where you see the red double arrow is nails exposed along the wall into the step flashing, so we need to remove all the roofing material from the gutter line up to the ridge, repair or replace any damaged step flashing, then re-shingle that area.

Now also there’s a ridge vent directly behind the stack pipe and this ridge vent is also attributing to the stack pipe leak. So we need to take the ridge vent off, seal the deck very well with a Geocel Tripolymer sealant and then we’re going to re-install the ridge vent. Now very important, when we fasten it back into place we need to make sure that we nail into the rafters every 16 to 24 inches then reseal the fasteners.

Now another thing, I asked the homeowner “do you use this satellite dish?” and he said no. And so I told her, “Very good. Let’s just remove it because that’s going to be the next area where you’re going to develop a leak, because the people that installed the satellite dishes are not roofing contractors and they just bolt it right into the roof without sealing. So we’re going to remove the satellite dish and then re-shingle this area.

Now she’s called other people from Mount Vernon to give her an estimate for roof repair and they were all saying, “Let’s just seal the vent pipe and seal the ridge vent and that will take care of the problem.” But the only way you can do a proper roof repair in Mount Vernon is, you have to take things apart and get down to the source of the problem.

When you find the source you either repair the flashing or you change it. Now, when you look at this picture here you can see that the gutter was dropping down, and also a squirrel ate right through the wood fascia. So the only way we can correct problem is remove the gutter entirely, replace the damaged wood fascia with new, and then we’re going to cap off the wood fascia with aluminum, and then re-install the gutter.
