Ice dam buildup caused this Centreville home to need roof repair
Hi this is Steve from rooftwins.com. We specialize in roof repair in Centreville, Virginia. I’ll never forget back in February 2010, we got clobbered with four feet of snow and to make matters even worse many of the homes here developed ice dam build-up inside their gutters because the homes were not properly ventilated or insulated and ice dam can cause a tremendous amount of damage to all levels of your home.
Now when you look at this picture you’ll see all the ice on the exterior wall and on the window but the problem is, the ice is also inside the wall between the outside vinyl siding and drywall. Now ice dam can become a very vicious cycle and can last for a few weeks if it not resolved immediately and what I mean is, when the ice inside the wall starts to thaw out from the warming temperatures, the water will travel down inside the wall and leak above any windows or doors below and can settle all the way down to the basement and cause a major flood.
So the best thing to do to stop further water from coming into your home is for us to remove the gutter in sections. Once the gutter is removed, then we will clean off all snow and ice from the roof and then perform the proper roof repair procedures to your Centreville home and that means, remove four courses of roof shingles starting from the gutter line and work our way up. When that’s completed, we will install ice and water shield to the wood deck and will overlap the wood fascia approximately four inches and then screw a new gutter into place and perform the proper roofing procedures. Now with the ice and water shield applied underneath the roof shingles and behind the gutter to the wood fascia will prevent water from seeping in through the sides of the roof nails holding the roof shingles into place or through the sides of the gutter spikes.
